Recording

Recording in music is the process of capturing audio performances so they can be stored, played back, and manipulated later. Although I have a home studio, It’s no ideal for recording drums or full bands due to size restraint. This is easily overcome by hiring a larger space either here in Bunbury, or Perth. I can also come to you if you have a good sized area.

I have all the equipment needed to record remotely with a full set of drum mics, DI’s and condenser mics to accommodate most recording needs.

I have access to high-end microphones through a local music store, should the project require them. My primary recording setup features an Apollo Twin interface, delivering world-class audio quality. This is expanded via ADAT to a Saffire Pro 40, giving me a total of 10 high-quality input channels.

I work in Studio One Pro 7 as my DAW of choice, complemented by a wide range of premium plugins from UAD, Plugin Alliance, Slate Digital, FabFilter, Waves, and more.

Here’s a concise breakdown:

  • Where it happens:
    In a controlled environment (like a studio or home studio) or in the field (live venues, outdoors).
  • What you end up with:
    A multi-channel audio file (stems or a stereo mix) that serves as the raw material for mixing, editing, and mastering.
  • What gets captured:
    Sound waves produced by voices, instruments, or any sound source.
  • How it’s captured:
    By a microphone or direct input into a recording device (audio interface, digital recorder, or computer with a DAW).

Key concepts:

  • Signal path:
    Source → preamp/DI → interface → computer/software → playback.
  • Latency:
    The delay between playing a note and hearing it back in headphones or monitors.
  • Recording formats:
    Depending on the setup, you might record WAV or AIFF at various sample rates (e.g., 44.1 kHz, 48 kHz, 96 kHz) and bit depths (e.g., 16-bit, 24-bit).

Recording services are priced $60 AUD, per hour.
